How to Feel Confident in Front of the Camera: Portrait Session Tips

EPURTURE · 12 October 2026

Most people say "I'm not photogenic." In truth, almost nobody is comfortable in front of a lens at first. A few small habits make a big difference. 1. Know why you're being photographed A LinkedIn headshot, a family keepsake and a fashion portfolio need different moods. Tell your photographer the purpose so they can plan light, background and expression. 2. Wear what makes you feel like yourself Solid colours and well-fitted clothes work best. Bring one backup outfit. If you love an accessory, wear it — confidence shows. 3. Relax your shoulders and breathe Tension shows up first in the shoulders and jaw. Drop your shoulders, take a slow breath out just before the shot, and let your mouth soften. 4. Angles help — trust your photographer Turning your body slightly away from the camera, bringing your chin a little forward and shifting your weight to your back foot are classic tricks that flatter everyone. 5. Think of someone you love A real thought gives a real expression. Many of the warmest portraits come from a memory rather than "say cheese". 6. Give it time The first ten minutes are a warm-up. By the middle of the session you'll forget the camera is there — that's when the best photos happen. See our portrait work in the homepage gallery and book a session when you're ready.
